EQUESTRIAN knitting advice!

A person's attitude to knitting is indicative of their attitude to life, don't you think? A customer flew in recently on a mission to find some yarn to complete a half-finished baby's sweater. Unfortunately the yarn she had been using had been discontinued. Despite her chagrin, she busied herself with finding the closest match with the single-minded confidence of Miss Marple on a mission. Holding aloft a ball of yarn, which we both assessed as reasonably close to the original, she declared 'Well! As my mother used to say, a man on a riding horse would never notice that!' Now there's a gung-ho approach to knitting that one can only admire.

There has been a very favourable response to the man's sweater shown in last week's newsletter that I am knitting in Rowan Felted Tweed Aran from Martin Storey's splendid 'Journeyman' men's collection. In 10 days I have finished the back and the front and the first sleeve is well under way. This is by way of encouraging those who like colourwork and have never knitted a garment using the slip-stitch method (where you only ever use one colour in a row, unlike Fair Isle or intarsia) to give it a go. I thought that I was leaving it rather late to knit a sweater in time for Christmas but hey presto! There is one row where the slip stitch got a bit muddled (see below) and I am asking myself if it would distract a man on a riding horse. There is always Swiss darning of course to cover a multitude of errors.

We hope that as the evenings draw in and winter begins to take hold that you enjoy your knitting and crochet. Come and see us for ideas and inspiration and to show us what you are making and do remember to send photos!

Happy Knitting

Cairney has almost finished knitting her wonderful, personalised version of the the Dee Hardwicke "A Story in Yarn" heirloom quilt in many shades of Rowan Felted Tweed yarn.  Most of the panels have been designed by Cairney herself, but you can knit the original version from Dee's original book, available in store.
