Knitting in the Depths of Winter - Oxford Yarn Store

knitting in the depths of winter

If you are reading this anywhere in the UK you will agree that this is perfect knitting weather. I spent last weekend in East Anglia, avoiding nonogenarians causing mayhem on the highways and the spectre of the North Sea defying all but the hardiest types to venture near the coast. What better excuse is needed for staying indoors, keeping cosy and knitting?

So here's what's occuring at the wool face. As well as garment knitting there is always a lot of baby knitting going on with a great selection of patterns and ideas for baby garments and blankets. Sock knitting is a firm favourite wih many of us having to have some socks 'on the go', whatever else we may happen to be knitting. Accessories remain popular - hats, fingerless mitts and scarves. Many knitters love to indulge in a special yarn for a single skein project. Shawls remain popular - from the discreet to the sublime!

This is also a great time of year for knitting a throw. It can insulate you as you knit - far better in January than in July. With this in mind we have made up kits for the popular Noro Hearts throw - see below. We also love the Martin Storey book 'Afghan Knits' with its colourful, geometric designs.

It's also a good time of year for classes. We have lots of knitting and crochet worshops beween now and Easter - take a look at them on our website or come in and pick up a printed programme.

And don't forget to share your knitting pics with us. You know how much delight we all take in seeing each others' work.

Happy Knitting and Crocheting!

Karen

Helena is wearing a scarf using Rialto Sock yarn.  All of the self striping or self patterning sock yarns we stock make great shawls, scarves and wraps as well as socks.

Cairney has completed her "A Story in Yarn" knitted quilt. Based on the Dee Hardwicke pattern book, Cairney has let her imagination run riot in designing her own hexagons for this full version knitted in Rowan Felted Tweed yarn. Dee's book contains patterns for 16 hexagonal blocks that take inspiraion from the natural world, following the seasons. It takes you through the process - 'How to design and knit an intarsia heirloom quilt' - allowing you to follow the charted patterns in this lovely book and/or to make up your own. We think that Cairney's quilt is stunning, reflecing as it does a year in which he has moved from Hamphire to France.

  guys Knit.

Guys Knit is a new 'how to knit' book available in store.  By popular knitting pattern designer Sockmatician, the book is aimed at encouraging more men to knit. Fran, one of our regular Customer Knits contributors, has written a review of this book, see below.

Guys Knit. The Instruction Manual. Haynes Publishing
'My husband (Don) received the above book for Christmas, from his son Cyrus as a surprise. It was quickly handed to me!! I've read it from cover to cover and as a teach yourself/guide to knitting and it is one of the best that I have read. It's informative, easy to read and funny. The explanatory diagrams and photographs, taken by Cyrus Mower (Don's son), who was one of the photographers, are excellent and easy to follow. It has knitting techniques, patterns and, for those of us who are good with technology, video links showing you how it's done.
I've learnt a great deal from it and I've been knitting for years!! I would thoroughly recommend it.'
Thank you Fran for this great review. I hope that it has persuaded Don to pick up some kniting needles!
