Phone a Friend! - Oxford Yarn Store
  Phone a friend!

One of the great things about offering a mail order service is that we get to talk with people all over the place, many of whom are old friends by now. For instance the phone rings and it's my favourite gentleman caller. He has the voice of a seasoned actor - deep, languid, meticulous modulation. Think of melting chocolate. 'Nicholas!' I exclaim, at which instant recognition he feigns surprise. The scarf that he knitted for his daughter for Christmas was very well-received, he tells me, complimenting me on the suggestion I made for what turned out to be the perfect yarn. His tone then becomes self-deprecating as he confides that his wife has ordered him to get knitting again, suggesting perhaps that it stops him from getting under foot. He's cooking lunch, he says, and we swap soup recipes as I picture him beside an Aga in his kitchen in Tonbridge. At the end of this conversation I feel as though all is entirely well with the world and that my contribution to the sum of human happiness - including a superior knowledge of Alpaca blend DK yarns and butternut squash soup - really makes a difference.

Then there's Gillian who called this week from Spain. She's an ex-pat whose vital supplies from the old country include regular shipments of Rowan yarn and patterns. The conversation, ostensibly regarding a mail order, turns into the most entertaining routine as she apologises for barking instructions at the dog who is making a terrible din in the background and covers the weather, what the neighbours are up to, our respective states of health and the general exuberance that comes from the avoidance of a dreary British winter and relishing the next knitting challenge. An enviable life this and by the end of the conversation I feel, as I said to James, as though I have lived through an episode of 'Escape to the Sun'.

The point is that knitting occurs within the context of lives that are as diverse as they are interesting. This common thread draws together people from all backgrounds, providing snapshots of each others' lives. We love this aspect of life at the wool face.

Here's the sweater I have just knitted in Rowan Felted Tweed. Previously shown as a work in progress, it is modelled by Vicky, co-owner of he produce shop next door. The pattern is Heart Leaf Boxy Jumper from Dee Hardwicke's 'Colourwork Knits'. It was a joy to knit from start to finish!

Now comes the tough decision of what to knit next! So many lovely yarns including those new in from Rowan. Come and have a look. We currently have patterns and yarns still on sale and it is still perfect knitting weather!

The big excitement of the next week will be the arrival of Laine 7 magazine. This is a favourite publcation from Finland and we are taking pre orders owing to its huge popularity. (We also have a very limited number of back issues of Laine 1 - 6 still in stock).

Have a great weekend and Happy Knitting!

Laura has knitted the pattern, Afterparty, from Laine Magazine issue 6. She says it's the first sweater that she has knitted since the age of 14. Wow! We don't know if to believe her!!

Angelika caused quite a sensation at Knit Club with this so simple wrap knitted in a week using 3 balls of Rowan Kidsilk Haze. Isager Mohair would work equally well. You just cast on 90 stitches and knit the balls consecutively.

Andrea knitted this cushion from leftover yarn from her Noro Hearts throw project. It's for her dog Dylan who is seen enjoying having it in his bed!

Julia has knitted this beautiful cardigan using Adriafil Sierra Andina yarn.  Julia also recently finished the quilt pictured below, and although not knitted, we thought you would love to see it anyway!

Here's a great poncho knitted in Alpaca 2. Its delighted wearer made up the design herself.

Roshi has knitted this version of a wrap from Rowan Magazine 63 using Felted Tweed and Cotton Glace. It is stuning and drapes beautifully.
