Here Comes the Hurdy Gurdy Man! - Oxford Yarn Store
  A Hurdy gurdy world!

The other day I came in to find James chuckling away to himself even more than usual. His sense of the absurd had been tickled upon answering the phone to a gentleman caller who had enquired as to whether we sold 'cotton wool in long strands'. He was, he explained, attempting to repair his Hurdy Gurdy. James informed him that we sold both cotton and wool which are indeed spun in long strands. Our enquirer appeared unconvinced that James knew what he was talking about, asserting that he did not want to be sold the kind of cotton wool that you can get in Boots. James and I put our heads together, did some googling but ultimately had to admit defeat when it came to offering advice on Hurdy Gurdy repairs. If you're as old as I am you might remember a dreadful song by Donovan about a Hurdy Gurdy Man. It only makes sense when listened to in the state that he must have been in when he wrote it. Anyway, this throwback to the sixties has been going around in my head since Tuesday in a most unwelcome manner - only tolerable in drowning out the incessant noise of the Brexit bust-up. Never have we needed our knitting and crochet more than we do now at this time of naional crisis. But never mind that. As my critic recently warned me, I should leave politics to the experts.

This week I have started a crochet project inspired by Corinne who made a lovely wrap in Perth sock yarn. There are few things as pleasurable as working with variegated or gradient yarn. You just want to keep going to delight in the colour changes. It just takes two balls of yarn and a 5mm crochet hook!

Come and see what's new in store. There are lots of lovely options for Spring projects. And we eagerly await the imminent arrival of Helga Isager's new pattern book Stitches - on its way over from Denmark as we speak. See details below of an offer we will have on yarn for the patterns in it as well as an offer on yarn for patterns in her mother Marianne's beautiful recent pattern book Twelve Knitted Sweaters from Tversted.

Happy Knitting and Crocheting

A highlight of the year so far was a return visit by Cyd Engel, formerly of Arizona where she had a yarn shop, now living in Texas.  It was great to catch up and to find further inspiration in her knitted shawls. This one is a wrap knitted quite simply in Isager's Alpaca 2 in a total of eight sripes (could be fewer).

Karen here in Cyd's fabulous Malabrigo Sock yarn shawl. The pattern is Line Break by Vera Valimaki

Fran has knitted this sweater from a Rowan pattern - Lyra. It has been featured regularly of late since finding favour with the Wednesday morning Knit Club and Karen. Knitted here in a recently arrived Juniper Moon Farm cotton chunky yarn, Bud.

We had another lovely welcome return visit on Wednesday morning from Evelyn. She was sporting this hat knitted in Jamieson's Spindrift.

Here is another tour de force of Fair Isle knitting by Sandra, once again using Jamieson's Spindrift.
