Oxford Yarn Store provides a wide range of workshops (see below for monthly listings) for knitting and crochet with something suitable for all abilities from absolute beginners to those with more experience wanting to try something new.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds for cancellations of workshop bookings can only be made if the space is successfully resold. Please double check your availability on the date before booking.  

In the event of cancellation by Oxford Yarn Store a full refund will be made. 

Oxford Yarn Store Customer Knit Clubs:

Please note that our Knit Clubs are currently running at capacity, please contact us to enquire about attending these sessions if you have not done so before. 

Knit Clubs are a free, untutored social events for customers of the store and are not classes or advice sessions. Please see how to get knitting advice or private lessons below, including our new Knit Nurse Nights on the last Tuesday of the month which are supported Knit Clubs (see listings below for full detals):

Advice

We are happy to offer general advice on knitting problems to our customers.  However this is not possible on Wednesday mornings or Saturday's when we are generally too busy in the shop.  Please also note that detailed advice requiring a lesson is charged at £20.00 per hour.

One to One Private Lessons:  We are happy to offer private knitting* lessons upon request, please contact us for more details.  These are charged at £20.00 per hour per person at a mutually agreed time (generally private lessons can be arranged for between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday subject to availability of a tutor - please enquire).  * Sadly we cannot offer one to one crochet lessons.

Professional Finishing Techniques - SOLD OUT

Rowan tutor Avril Best teaches you how to give your work a professional finish - tension; cast on methods; shaping techniques; button holes and picked-up edges; bands, collars; short-row shaping and three-needle cast-off for shoulder seams; blocking and pressing; putting in sleeves and sewing up using mattress stitch.

Date: Saturday 17th November  

Time: 10.30am to 4.30pm

Skill Level:  Intermediate level class.  You hould be confiden with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit, purl, cast off, increase and decrease, and reading basic patterns).

Materials:  4mm knitting needles, sharp scissors, tapestry / darning nedle.  You also need to knit x2 10cm squares in double knitting wool in stocking stitch to bring to the class.













 

Introduction to Short Row Shaping

In his class we will explore the use of the popular short row technique in knitting when used to shape your knitting.  Knitting ‘incomplete rows’ of stitches  - so not all stitches are used on every row - we will look a the main techniques covering wrap and turn, German and Japanese short row techniques.

Date: Sunday 18th November

Time: 10am to 1pm

Price: £30 (or £50 if booked together with Edgings workshop this pm).

Skill Level: Intermediate level class.  You hould be confiden with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit, purl, cast off, increase and decrease, and reading basic patterns).

Materials:  4mm knitting needles and 50g of DK weight wool.  Rowan Pure Wool Superwash DK or Rico Merino DK are rececommended.


 

Edgings - I-cord and Picot Borders

In this workshop you will learn a variety of techniques for creating edgings that give a final flourish to garments, shawls and accessories. These include I-cord and Picot edgings as well as knitted borders onto ‘live’ stitches. Many current designs call for edgings that add interest to your work and so this workshop will broaden your skills and your ability to tackle new projects.

Time: 2pm to 5pm

Introduction to Steeking - SOLD OUT

Explore the possibilities that knitting Fair Isle knitting in the round and steeking (literally cutting open your knitting) can offer. This method is quicker and better for your tension as you are always knitting the front of the work and it allows you to knit a flat piece (e.g. a throw) or a garment with an opening (e.g. a cardigan) in the round. Trust us - it doesn’t ruin your knitting. Generations of Shetland Island knitters cannot be wrong!  We’ll take you step by step through the process to ensure a happy outcome.

Date: Friday 23rd November

Time: 10am to 1pm

Skill Level:  Intermediate to Experienced level.  You must be able to knit Fair Isle / Stranded Colourwork in the round on double pointed needles OR using the magic loop for a small circumference knitted sample. 

Materials Needed: 4mm double ponted needles OR 4mm long circualrs for magic loop kniting.  3mm crochet hook, sharp scissors. Two 50g balls of DK wool in contrasting colours. Rowan Pure Wool Superwash DK or Rico Merino DK are rececommended.

Introduction to Entrelac Knitting

Entrelac is a knitting technique used to create a textured diamond pattern and the result resembles basket-woven strips of knitted fabric.  It ca be knit in one colour and is also very effective if several colours are used when knitting in entrelac stripes.  

Date: Friday 23rd November

Time: 2pm to 5pm

Price: £30

Skills needed: Intermediate, basic knitting skills only are needed - cast on, knit, purl, decreases and ideally, picking up stitches, but the latter two techniques are covered in the class if you are unfamiliar with those techniques.

Materials Needed:  4mm knitting needles (we will be kniting flat). Two 50g balls of DK wool in contrasting colours. 
Rowan Pure Wool Superwash DK or Rico Merino DK are rececommended. 

Learn to Crochet

Crochet is versatile, portable and a great way to create lovely garments, throws and accessories. You will learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read a pattern as you create the classic crochet building block - a Granny Square!

Date: Saturday 24th November 

Time:  10am to 1pm

Skill Level:  No experience needed.

Price: £30 (or £50 for both sessions when booked together with an Improvers’ Crochet class this term).

Materals:  All materials are included including a crochet hook to keep.

Improvers Crochet

This class is ideal for those who know the basics of crochet and who want to develop their skills. Following on from Learn to Crochet you will learn more about reading crochet patterns and making more complex designs as you start on a simple project.

Saturday 24th November 

Time: 2pm to 5pm   

Price: (£30) (or £50 for for both sessions when booked together with a Learn to Crochet class this term.

Skill Level:  Confidence with basic crochet stitches (chain, double and treble).  A Learn to Crochet class is an ideal class to take before this class if you cannot crochet or want to refresh the basics.

Materials:  You wil need a selection of medium size hooks (3mm, 3.5mm and 4mm) and yarn for a project you plan to go on to make or want supporting in starting in the class.  Sample yarns to practice with are provided.

Brioche Knitting - Next Steps

If you have mastered the basic technique of Brioche knitting (perhaps you have attended our Introduction to Brioche class) and want to develop your skills in this technique further, then this is the class for you. We will look in more detail at shaping Brioche patterns using increase and decrease brioche stitches, incorporating a neat edge and understanding brioche patterns and charts, plus avoiding mistakes by using lifelines

Date: Sunday 25th November

Time: 10.30am to 4.30pm

Price: £55.

Skill Level:  Experienced knitter level.  You should be confident with the basic two-colour Brioche* technique as this cannot be taught in the class!  Please practice some basic two colour Brioche before the class if you have not knitted any recently.  You should be confident with geneal knitting techniques and with reading knitting patterns and charts.

Materials:  4.5mm circular knitting needles, 60cm long and two 50g balls of DK wool in contrasting colours. Rowan Pure Wool Superwash DK or Rico Merino DK are rececommended. 

* There is an Introduction to Brioche Knitting workshop available to learn the basics.

 

Knit Nurse Night!

If you need general help and support with your knitting then the Knit Nurse is here to assist!  Come along to our new evening supported knitting sessions where you can get help and advice on a whole range of small knitting queries and problems and where you can also enjoy an evening of social knitting with support on hand. 

Date: Tuesday 27th November

Time: 6pm to 8pm. 

Please note that booking is essential.

Skill Level:  This is a supported, problem solving knitting session.  You will be working on a project you need help or support with.  Please discuss your needs when booking.

DECember 2018 

Learn to Knit Lace

In this workshop you will be taught the basic skills for lace knitting with an introduction to the main stitches; how to understand lace patterns and charts and how to avoid mistakes; plus plenty of practice and a free simple lace pattern to get you started.

Date: Saturday 1st December

Time: 10am to 1pm

Price: £30 (or £50 if you booked together with Learn to Knit Cables class this pm)

Skill Level:  Intermediate level class.  You hould be confiden with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit, purl, cast off, increase and decrease, and reading basic patterns).

Materials: You will need 4 knitting needles.

Learn to Knit Cables

Learn to master the basic technique of knitted cables as well as how to follow patterns and charts that incorporate this popular design feature. Other textured stitches will also be explored including moss stitch and its variations and creating bobbles.

Date: Saturday 1st December

Time: 2pm to 5pm

Price: £30 (or £50 if you booked together with Learn to Knit Lace class this a.m.)

Skill Level:  Intermediate level class.  You hould be confident with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit, purl, cast off, increase and decrease, and reading basic patterns).

Materials: You will need 4 knitting needles and a cable needle.
Christmas Crochet

Have pre-Christmas fun crocheting Christmas tree decorations from a selection of patterns provided.  Hang from your tree or make garlands to hang around the room.  Confidence with basic crochet skills is required for this class.

Date: Tuesday 4th December

Time: 10am to 1pm

Price: £30 (or £50 if books together with Xmas Balls this pm)

Skill Level:  Confidence with basic crochet stitches (chain, double and treble).

Materials:  You will need a 4mm crochet hook and Chrismas coloured DK weight yarn (e.g. red, white, green).

 
Knitted Christmas Baubles

Have more seasonal fun knitting cute Christmas baubles to add to you tree decorations! Or make lots and string them together to make a garland. We will be knitting in the round using double pointed needles and the stranded Fair Isle technique.  Both of these skills will be taught in the class if you haven’t tried them before.

Materials:  You will need 3mm double pointed needles and christmas colourer 4ply yarn (e.g. red, green, white, brown).
