Oxford Yarn Store provides a wide range of workshops (see below for monthly listings) for knitting and crochet with something suitable for all abilities from absolute beginners to those with more experience wanting to try something new.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds for cancellations of workshop bookings can only be made if the space is successfully resold. Please double check your availability on the date before booking.  

In the event of cancellation by Oxford Yarn Store a full refund will be made.

Please note that our Knit Clubs are currently running at capacity, please contact us to enquire about attending these sessions if you have not done so before. 

Knit Clubs are a free, untutored social events for customers of the store and are not classes or advice sessions. Please see how to get knitting advice or private lessons below:

Advice

We are happy to offer general advice on knitting problems to our customers.  However this is not possible on Wednesday mornings or Saturday's when we are generally too busy in the shop.  Please also note that detailed advice requiring a lesson is charged at £20.00 per hour.

One to One Private Lessons:  We are happy to offer private knitting* lessons upon request, please contact us for more details.  These are charged at £20.00 per hour per person at a mutually agreed time (generally private lessons can be arranged for between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday subject to availability of a tutor - please enquire).  * Sadly we cannot offer one to one crochet lessons.

WORKSHOPS IN January 2019
 

Learn to Crochet

Crochet is versatile, portable and a great way to create lovely garments, throws and accessories. You will learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read a pattern as you create the classic crochet building block - a Granny Square!

Date: Saturday 12th January 

Time:  10am to 1pm

Skill Level:  No experience needed.

Price: £30 (or £50 for both sessions when booked together with an Improvers’ Crochet class this term).

Materals:  All materials are included including a crochet hook to keep.

Improvers Crochet

This class is ideal for those who know the basics of crochet and who want to develop their skills. Following on from Learn to Crochet you will learn more about reading crochet patterns and making more complex designs as you start on a simple project.

Saturday 12th January 

Time: 2pm to 5pm   

Price: (£30) (or £50 for for both sessions when booked together with a Learn to Crochet class this term.

Skill Level:  Confidence with basic crochet stitches (chain, double and treble).  A Learn to Crochet class is an ideal class to take before this class if you cannot crochet or want to refresh the basics.

Materials:  You wil need a selection of medium size hooks (3mm, 3.5mm and 4mm) and yarn for a project you plan to go on to make or want supporting in starting in the class.  Sample yarns to practice with are provided.

Professional Finishing Techniques with Rowan

Learn how to finish your work professionally, this essential workshop covers: cast on methods; shaping techniques; button holes; picked-up edges; borders; short-row shaping; shoulder seams; blocking and pressing; putting in sleeves; sewing up using mattress stitch and lots more!

Saturday 26th January

Time: 10.30am to 4.30pm

Skill Level:

Price:  £55.00

Materials : You will need to bring along two knitted squares to the class, these should be in double knitting weight wool and knitted on 4mm knitting needles in stocking stitch and 10cm by 10cm.  You will also need 4mm knitting needles, scissors and a tapestry needle.
 
Colourwork Knitting

Learn the basic techniques used to achieve beautiful two-coloured knitting. We will explore a range of knitting techniques that can be used to introduce colour into knitting including slip stitches and intarsia. Knitting will be done 'flat' on straight needles.

Sunday 27th January

Skill Level: Intermediate knitters, you should be comfortable with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit and purl).

Price:  £55.00

Materials: You will need 4mm knitting needles and two 50g balls of DK weight yarn in contrasting colours.

Learn to Knit 

This class is an ideal introduction to the basic skills needed to turn you into a confident knitter.  Over two sessions you will learn to cast on, make knit and purl stitches, decrease and cast off.  No previous knitting experience is required. Please note that knitting is taught right handed and using the English style.

Saturday 2nd and 9th February

Time: 10am to 1pm  

Price: £40

Skill Level: No knitting experince is required.  

Materials: Knitting needles and practice yarns are included.





















 
Introduction to Fair Isle Knitting

Learn Fair Isle stranded colourwork knitting in this class by mastering the basic skills needed to tackle two colours per row including -  understanding written and charted Fair Isle patterns; stranding yarns; Fair Isle tension and dealing with ends.

Saturday 2nd February

Time: 2pm to 5pm

Price: £30

Skill Level: Intermediate level, you should be comfortable with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit, purl). 

Materials: 4mm knitting needles and two 50g balls of yarn in contrasting colours.
Introduction to Steeking

Learn how to knit Fair Isle in the round and steek your work - literally cut it open in the Shetland tradition. As you are always knitting the front of the work his method allows you to knit a flat piece (e.g. a throw) or a garment with an opening (e.g. a cardigan) in the round. We’ll take you step by step through the process to ensure a happy outcome.

Saturday 9th February

Time: 2pm to 5pm

Price: £30

Skill Level:  Intermediate to experienced level, you should be comfortable knitting the Fair Isle / stranded colour work technique in the round on a small circumference. 

Materials: 50g of contrasting colour WOOL yarn in two shades.  There wil be a small amount of pre-knitting to do before the class in preparation.  4mm circular OR double pointed needles to knit a small circumfrenece in the round, 3mm crochet hook and sharp scissors.
Learn to Knit Socks in a Day!

Learn to knit socks in the classic style, using 4mm double pointed needles and working top-down from the cuff to the toe.

In just 1 day we will explore; knitting in the round using double pointed needles (DPNs); turning a heel; shaping for the ankle and toes plus grafting using kitchener stitch for a seamless finish.

We will knit a double knit yarn sample sock on 4mm needles.

Continental Fair Isle Knitting

Learn how to knit Fair Isle in the round using; circular knitting needles; the magic loop technique; corrugated rib; knitting holding different colour yarns in each hand using English and Continental knitting techniques combined. For intermediate knitters - no previous experience of Fair Isle or circular knitting is required however.

Sunday 24th February

Skill Level:  Intermediate level, you should be comfortable with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit, purl). 

Materials: You will need 50g each of double knit weight yarn in two contrasting colours and a pair of 4mm and 80cm or 100cm long circular knnitting needles.

Introduction to Brioche Knitting

Brioche is a beautiful stitch that creates a soft, draping and warm knitted fabric and is a popular technique to acquire. In this class you will learn the principles of working Brioche in one and two colours, practicing both techniques as you start to work on a scarf, cowl or hat.  Experience needed: basic knit and purl stitches, increasing and decreasing.

Skill Level:  Intermediate level, you should be comfortable with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit, purl). 

Materials: You will need a 4.5mm, 60cm long circular knitting needle and x2 50g balls double knit weight yarn in contrasting colours.

Introduction to Entrelac Knitting

Entrelac is a knitting technique used to create a textured diamond pattern and the result resembles basket-woven strips of knitted fabric.  It can be knitted in one colour and is also very effective if several colours are used when knitting in entrelac stripes.  Basic knitting skills only are needed.

Materials: You will need a 4mm knitting needles and x2 50g balls double knit weight yarn in contrasting colours.

 
Brioche Knitting - Next Steps

If you have mastered the basic technique of Brioche knitting (perhaps you have attended our Introduction to Brioche class) and want to develop your skills in this technique further, then this is the class for you. We will look in more detail at shaping Brioche patterns using increase and decrease brioche stitches, incorporating a neat edge and understanding brioche patterns and charts, plus avoiding mistakes by using lifelines.

Skill Level: intermediate to exprinced skill level.  You must be comfortable with knitting two colour brioche for this class.

Materials Needed:  4 or 4.5mm 60cm circular knitting needles and two 50g balls of DK or Worstd wool in contrasting colours.
