Oxford Yarn Store provides a wide range of workshops (listed below) for knitting and crochet with something suitable for all abilities from absolute beginners to those with more experience wanting to try something new.

Please contact us in person at the store or telephone us on 01865 604112 during opening hours.   Payment of the class fee is required at the time of booking.  We operate waiting lists for classes that sell out.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds for cancellations of workshop bookings can only be made if the space is successfully resold. Please check your availability on the date before booking.  Please note that it can be very difficult to resell a space for cancellations made close to the date of the class and very unlikely when cancelled on the day itself.

In the event of cancellation by Oxford Yarn Store a full refund will be made. 

Oxford Yarn Store Customer Knit Clubs:

Bring your knitting or crochet along to one of our Knit Clubs hosted here at Oxford Yarn Store.  This is a fun, social event for customers of the store.

Wednesday mornings (10am to 12 nooon)

Thursday evenings (6pm to 8.30pm):  

Knit Club is a free, untutored social event for customers of the store and is not a class.

Private Lessons:  We are happy to offer private knitting lessons upon request, please contact us for more details.  These are charged at £20.00 per hour at a mutually agreed time (generally private lessons can be arranged for between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday subject to availability of a tutor - please enquire).  

Advice:  We are happy to offer general advice on knitting problems.  However this is not possible on Saturday's when we are generally too busy in the shop.  Please also note that detailed advice requiring a lesson is charged at £20.00 per hour.

Introduction to Brioche Knitting - SOLD OUT

Brioche is a beautiful stitch that creates a lofty, soft and warm knitted fabric and is currently a very popular technique to acquire. In this class we’ll learn the basic principles of working Brioche in one and two colours plus simple Brioche increases and decreases.

Skill level: Intermediate - you should be confident with basic knit and purl stitches, simple increasing and decreasing and reading a simple knitting pattern.


Materials:  You will need a 4.5mm 60cm long circular knitting needle.

Learn to Knit
Monday 2nd and 9th October
6.30pm to 8.30pm


This class is an ideal introduction to the basic skills needed to turn you into a confident knitter.  Over two sessions you will learn to cast on, make knit and purl stitches, decrease and cast off.  

Skill Level: 
No previous experience is required but this class is suitable for absolute beginners and those returning to knitting after a break.

Materials:  A pair of knitting neeldes in provided to use and for you to keep, yarn to practice with is also supplied.

Continental Fair Isle Knitting
Sunday 15th October

Learn how to knit Fair Isle in the round using; circular knitting needles; the magic loop technique; corrugated rib; knitting holding different colour yarns in each hand using English and Continental knitting techniques combined.

Skill Level: For intermediate knitters or confident and well practiced beginners.  You should be able to cast on, knit and purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns - but no previous experience of Fair Isle or circular knitting is required.

Materials:  You will need a pair of 4mm, 80cm or 100cm long circular knitting needles.  Sample yarn to practice with is supplied.  A Fair Isle hat pattern is also supplied, you will need 50g each of a least two colours of DK weight yarn for the hat.

Improvers Crochet
Saturday 21st October

This class is ideal for those who know the basics of crochet and who want to develop their skills. Following on from Learn to Crochet you will learn more about reading crochet patterns and making more complex designs as you start on a simple project.

Skill Level:  Moving on from beginner to intermediate level.  This class is suitable for anyone who has started crochet (for example on one of our Learn to Crochet classes) and is ready to move on after some practice of the basics.  You should be familiar with basic crochet sttiches including chain, single, double and triples. 

Materials:  You will need a 3.5mm, 4mm and 4.5mm crochet hook.

Price:  £25 (or £40 for both classes if booked together with a Learn to Crochet class this term).

 
Professional Finishing Tehniques
Saturday 28th October

Rowan tutor Avril Best teaches you how to give your work a professional finish - tension; cast on methods; shaping techniques; button holes and picked-up edges; bands, collars; short-row shaping and three-needle cast-off for shoulder seams; blocking and pressing; putting in sleeves and sewing up using mattress stitch.

Skill Level:  Intermediate knitters wanting to improve there overall knitting techniques and achieve a professional look to their hand knitting.  You shoul dbe comfortable with general knitting techniques (cast on, knit and purl, increase/decrease) and able to read typical knittting patterns.  

Materials:  You will need 4mm knitting needles and to bring with you two knitted squares (10 cm by 10cm / 4 inches by 4 inches, knit in stocking stitch in DK weight yarn).

Colour Work Knitting
Tuesday 31st October

We will explore alternative knitting techniques that we can use to introduce colour into our knitting covering slip stitch and intarsia methods.

Slip Stich is a great technique for the beginner colour work knitter as only one color is ever used per row of knitting and yet beautiful two colour rows are the end result!

Intarsia is an amazing technique that allows the knitter to use an unlimited number of colours per row in their knitting.  All intarsia knitting is single thickness so there is no carrying of strands to deal with.  Popularised by the likes of Kaffe Fassett, once mastererd Intarsia opens up a realm of knitting possibilties. 

Skill level:  Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit &purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.  All knitting is done flat on straight needles in this class.

Materials:  You will need 4mm kntitng needles.

Edgings: I-cord and Picot Borders
Thursday 2nd November

In this workshop you will learn a variety of techniques for creating edgings that give a final flourish to garments, shawls and accessories. These include I-cord and Picot edgings as well as knitted borders onto ‘live’ stitches. Many current designs call for edgings that add interest to your work and so this workshop will broaden your skills and your ability to tackle new projects.

Skill Level:  
Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit &purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.

Materials:  You will need 4mm knitting needles.

Short Rows and Shaping
Thursday 2nd November
2pm to 5pm


Get to grips with the techniques to bring style and shape to your knitting with this workshop.  Understand how different increases and decrease stitches can be used to shape garments and make a beautiful design feature at the same time.  We will also look at short row shaping which can be used make interesting design features, ruffles and go around corners.

Skill Level:  Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit &purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.

Materials:  You will need 4mm knitting needles.

Knitting in the Round (or Circular Knitting)
Saturday 4th November

Unlock a whole new world of knitting by learning the essential skill of knitting in the round using circular knitting needles. When knitting in the round you can knit tubes such as cowls, socks, wrist warmers and sleeves for sweaters.  We will practice techniques and them move onto to start our first in-the-round project, a simple cowl.

Skill Level: Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit &purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.

Materials:  You will need a pair of 5mm circular knitting needle 60cm in length plus 100g of aran weight yarn to make a complete cowl.

Introduction to Fair Isle Knitting (or Stranded Knitting)

Learn to make beautiful, traditional Fair Isle patterned colour work knitting in this fun and informative class. Knitting flat we will master the basic skills needed to tackle two colours per row knitting covering key techniques including - understanding written and charted Fair Isle patterns; stranding yarns; Fair Isle tension and dealing with ends.  You can them start to make a pair of wrist warmers using a simple pattern provided.

Skill Level:  
Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit &purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.  

Materials:  You will need a pair of 3.25mm and 4mm knitting needles plus 50g of DK weight yarn in at least 2 colours for the wrist warmers.

Learn to Knit Socks
Monday 6th, 13th and 20th November
6.30pm to 8.30pm

Learn to make knitted socks the classic way: from the top down using double pointed needles (DPNs).  Learn to cast on and knit in the round, turn a heel and graft a seamless toe with kitchener stitch.  Perfect for autumn knitting, socks are light and portable and you have lovely warm socks ready for the coming  winter!

Skill Level:  Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit &purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.

Materials:  You will need 100g of sock yarn and a set of suitable sized double pointed needles (DPNs) for the yarn.

Crochet is versatile, portable and a great way to create lovely garments, throws and accessories. You will learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read a pattern as you create the classic crochet building block - a Granny Square!

Skill Level:  Beginner - no experience is necessary.

Materials:  All materials are included including a crochet hook for you to keep.

Double Knitting Socks
Saturday 18th November
10.30am to 4.30pm


Build on your double-knitting skills and learn to knit both of your socks at the same time. 

You will make (or be well on the way to making) a pair of baby socks on this day. This will involve learning to cast on two colours separately at the same time, working out how to manipulate your yarns for the rib you choose, knitting the heel flaps with open edges, picking up the gusset for both socks at once, left and right leaning decreases for double-knitting, and separating your socks to finish the toe. You will also learn how to correct mistakes.

Skill Level: this is not a course for beginner knitters, and you will find it easier if you have either knitted socks before, knitted “in the round” or done some double-knitting before (where you knit a double-sided fabric).

Materials: You will need 4.5mm knitting needles, either a set of double pointed needles or two circular needles of any length plus 3 or 4mm crochet hook. We will be using aran weight yarn and you will need 50g in two different colours.

In this workshop you will be taught the basic skills for lace knitting. It will cover an overview of lace knitting; an introduction to the main stitches; how to understand lace patterns and charts; how to avoid mistakes; using lifelines to protect your knitting plus plenty of knitting practice on samples and a free simple lace pattern to get you started.

Skill Level: Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit & purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.

Learn to Knit Cables

Learn to master the basic technique of knitted cables as well as how to follow patterns and charts that incorporate this popular design feature. Other textured stitches will also be explored including moss stitch and its variations, creating bobbles and other raised stitches

Skill Level: Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit &purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.

Materials:  You will need 4mm knitting needles and a cable needle.

Tunisian Crochet
Saturday 2nd December
10.30am to 4.30pm


Learn the technique of Tunisian crochet to produce a fabric that is both beautiful and unique.  You will work with rows of crochet stitches on a special crochet hook, rather than 1 stitch at a time.  Colour work techniques in Tunisian crochet will also be explored.  Basic crochet skills are required for this class.

Skill Level:  Intermedaite crochet.  You should be comfortable with basic cochet sttiches and technique sincluding chain, double amd triple stitches.

Materials:  You will need a 4mm tunisian crochet hook.

Knitted Christmas Baubles
Sunday 3rd December
10.30am to 1.30pm


Have fun learning to make beautiful knitted Christmas baubles.  These are knit in the round on double pointed needles.  You can knit them in plain or self patterning yarns or branch out into knitting beautiful fair isle patterns.  You choose!

Skill Level:  
Well practiced beginners or intermediate knitters.  You should be able to cast on, knit & purl and be comfortable with simple knitting patterns.

Materials:  You will need double pointed knitting needles suitable for either 4-ply (so 2.75mm) or double knitting (so 3.75mm) weight yarn, plus 50g to 100g of self patterning yarn or 50g each of at least 2 colours of solid colour yarns.

Most classes have a maximum of 6 participants (there can be more on a Sunday).
Classes are confirmed as booked upon receipt of payment only.

Some class fees include the cost of materials and others, where indicated, do not.  When booking we will tell you what you need to bring to the session. You will be offered a 10% discount on all materials and needles purchased in store for your class.
