WORKSHOPS, CLASSES, CLUBS AND EVENTS

Oxford Yarn Store provides a wide range of workshops (listed below) for knitting and crochet with something suitable for all abilities from absolute beginners to those with more experience wanting to try something new.

Please contact us in person at the store or telephone us on 01865 604112 during opening hours.   Payment of the class fee is rquired at the time of booking.  We operate waiting lists for classes that sell out.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds for cancellations of workshop bookings can only be made if the space is successfully resold. Please check your availability on the date before booking.  An administration fee of £2.00 (to cover bank processing fees) will be charged for any class refund processed should the space be successfully resold.  Please note that it can be very difficult to resell a space for cancellations made close to the date of the class and very unlikely when cancelled on the day itself.

In the event of cancellation by Oxford Yarn Store a full refund will be made. 

Knit Clubs:

Bring your knitting or crochet along to one of our Knit Clubs hosted here at Oxford Yarn Store.  This is a fun, social event for knitters of all abilities.

Wednesday mornings (10am to 12 nooon)

Thursday evenings (6pm to 8.30pm)

Knit Club is a free, untutored social event for customers of the store and is not a class.

Private Lessons:  We are happy to offer private knitting lessons upon request, please contact us for more details.  These are charged at £20.00 per hour at a mutually agreed time.

Advice:  We are happy to offer general advice on knitting problems.  However this is not possible on Saturday's when we are generally too busy in the shop.  Please also note that detailed advice requiring a lesson is charged at £20.00 per hour.

Two-At-A-Time, Toe-Up-Socks
Monday 5th and 26th June  
6.30pm to 8.30pm


Knitting socks from the toe up lets you try them on as you go to make sure that they fit. You will learn how to knit two socks at the same time on one long circular needle using the magic loop method. You will begin with the toe caps and the method for knitting two-at-a-time and then are asked to knit the length of the foot before the second class in which you will learn to turn the heel using a slip stitch method for extra cushioning.

Skill Level:  Intermediate.  Experience needed: confident with basic knit and purl stitches. No previous experience of sock knitting is required.

£40 (You will need a long 2.5mm or 2.75mm circular knititng needle and 100g of sock yarn)
Rowan Spring Summer 2017 Yarn Tasting Event
Saturday 10th June
2pm to 5pm

This event is a special treat for those of us who love Rowan yarns. Hosted by Katie Harrison from Rowan Yarns, there will be a trunk-show of the latest designs from Rowan and a chance to try out samples of the yarns. do come along to this fun event!

Free event with afternoon tea!  No need to book.  Come at any time between 2pm and 5pm - it is a "drop in and see what is on show" event not a set class with a timetable.
Professional Finishing Techniques
Friday 16th June
10.30am to 4.30pm


Rowan tutor Avril Best teaches you how to give your work a professional finish - tension; cast on methods; shaping techniques; button holes and picked-up edges; bands, collars; short-row shaping and three-needle cast-off for shoulder seams; blocking and pressing; putting in sleeves and sewing up using mattress stitch.

Skill Level:  Intermediate:  You should be confident with basic knitting techniques (cast on, knit and purl stitches).

£48 (You will need 4mm knitting needles, a sewing up needle and x2 knitted squares in DK yarn each10cm by 10cm in stocking stitch)

Tunisian Crochet
Friday 23rd June
10.30am to 4.30pm


Learn the technique of Tunisian crochet to produce a fabric that is both beautiful and unique.  You will work with rows of crochet stitches on a special crochet hook, rather than 1 stitch at a time.  Colour work techniques in Tunisian crochet will also be explored. 

Skill Level:  Confidence with basic crochet skills are required for this class.

Improvers Crochet
Saturday 24th June
10am to 1pm


This class is ideal for those who know the basics of crochet and who want to develop their skills. Following on from Learn to Crochet you will learn more about reading crochet patterns and making more complex designs as you start on a simple project.

Skill Level:  Beginner to intermediate: you should be able to crochet basic stitches (chain, single, double and triple crochet)

£25 (or £40 for 2 sessions when booked together with a Learn to Crochet class this term). 
Brioche Knitting
Sunday 25th June  
10.30am to 4.30pm


Brioche is a beautiful stitch that creates a soft, draping and warm fabric. For this reason it has become popular of late as a knitting technique to acquire. In this class we’ll learn the basic principles of working Brioche in one colour and two colours. Experience needed: confident with basic knit and purl stitches, increasing and decreasing. 
 
Skill Level:  Intermediate.  Experience needed: confident with basic knit and purl stitches, increasing and decreasing. 
 
£48 (You will need a pair of 4.5mm, 60cm long circular knitting needles).


July 2017

Socks from the Top Down
Monday 3rd, 10th and 17th July
6.30pm to 8.30pm


Learn to make knitted socks the classic way: from the top down using double pointed needles (DPNs).  Learn to cast on and knit in the round, turn a heel and graft a seamless toe with kitchener stitch.  Perfect for summer knitting, socks are light and portable and you have lovely warm socks ready for the coming autumn and winter!

Skill Level: Intermediate.  Confidence in basic knittng skills (cast on, knit and purl) are required. No expereince of knititng in the round or sock making is required.
 
£60 (You will need 2.5mm or 2.75mm DPNs and 100g of sock yarn)

Crochet is versatile, portable and a great way to create lovely garments, throws and accessories. You will learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read a pattern as you create the classic crochet building block - a Granny Square!

Skill level:  Beginner, no experience needed.

£25 (or £40 for 2 sessions when booked together with an Improvers Crochet class this term).  Inlcudes all materials.
Learn to Crochet

Design and Adapt Knitting Patterns
Saturday 15th July
10.30am to 4.30pm


In this workshop you will develop your technical expertise in designing a garment from scratch and adapting existing patterns. You will learn how to make a simple design, copy an existing garment and make alterations to existing designs. At the end of the day you will have an understanding of hand knit design and the confidence to write your own patterns and/or adapt patterns.

Skill Level:  Intermediate to Advanced:  You will need to be confident with core knitting skills and terminology and be confident with reading and interpreting typical knitting patterns.  Experience of knitting garments from patterns.

Double Knitting
Thursday 20th July  
10.30am to 4.30pm


Double Knitting produces a warm, completely reversible double-layered knitted fabric. Patterns are mirrored on the reverse and both sides are worked at the same time. You will learn the technique on a practice piece and in the afternoon you will start your own project. There will also be the option to design a small coaster or bookmark if you feel you need more practice before attempting a larger project.

Skill Level:  Intermediate.  Experience needed: confident with basic knit and purl stitches. 
 
£48 (You will need a pair of 4mm, knitting needles plus 100g DK weight yarn in 2 colours).

August 2017
 

Improvers Crochet
Saturday 18th August 
10am to 1pm


This class is ideal for those who know the basics of crochet and who want to develop their skills. Following on from Learn to Crochet you will learn more about reading crochet patterns and making more complex designs as you start on a simple project.

Skill Level:  Beginner to intermediate: you should be able to crochet basic stitches (chain, single, double and triple crochet)

£25 (or £40 for 2 sessions when booked together with a Learn to Crochet class this term). 



About Booking:

Most classes have a maximum of 6 participants (there can be more on a Sunday).
Classes are confirmed as booked upon receipt of payment only.

Some class fees include the cost of materials and others, where indicated, do not.  When booking we will tell you what you need to bring to the session. You will be offered a 10% discount on all materials and needles purchased in store for your class.
