Oxford Yarn Store provides a wide range of workshops (listed below) for knitting and crochet with something suitable for all abilities from absolute beginners to those with more experience wanting to try something new.

Please contact us in person at the store or telephone us on 01865 604112 during opening hours.   Payment of the class fee is required at the time of booking.  We operate waiting lists for classes that sell out.

Cancellation Policy

Refunds for cancellations of workshop bookings can only be made if the space is successfully resold. Please check your availability on the date before booking.  Please note that it can be very difficult to resell a space for cancellations made close to the date of the class and very unlikely when cancelled on the day itself.

In the event of cancellation by Oxford Yarn Store a full refund will be made. 

Oxford Yarn Store Customer Knit Clubs:

Bring your knitting or crochet along to one of our Knit Clubs hosted here at Oxford Yarn Store.  This is a fun, social event for customers of the store.

Wednesday mornings (10am to 12 nooon)

Advice:  We are happy to offer general advice on knitting problems.  However this is not possible on Wednesday mornings or Saturday's when we are generally too busy in the shop.  Please also note that detailed advice requiring a lesson is charged at £20.00 per hour.

Private Lessons:  We are happy to offer private knitting lessons upon request, please contact us for more details.  These are charged at £20.00 per hour at a mutually agreed time (generally private lessons can be arranged for between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday subject to availability of a tutor - please enquire).

Colour Work Knitting - 1 place left!
Thursday 22nd February

We will explore a range of knitting techniques we can use to introduce colour into our knitting including slip stitches and intarsia. Develop an understanding of the basic techniques used to achieve beautiful two-coloured knitting. Knitting will be done 'flat' on straight needles.

Skill Level: Intermediate knitting level, comfortable with casting on, knit and purl stitches and basic pattern reading.

Materials: You will need a pair of 4mm knitting needles. Sample yarns to practice with are provided but feel free to bring along any oddments of DK yarn you have as these can be usefully used in this class.

Continental Knitting and Norwegian Purl
Saturday 24th February
10.30am to 4.30pm


In the class we will learn to knit the Continental way, which involves holding your working yarn in your left hand and using a ‘picking’ technique.  Once mastered, this style of knitting can be much quicker than the traditional English style.  We will also look at the Norwegian purl stitch where the yarn is held at the back of the work!

Skill Level: Intermediate knitting level, comfortable with casting on, knit and purl stitches and basic pattern reading.  Please remember you will be learning a new way of knitting!

Introduction to Brioche Knitting  - SOLD OUT (next date 20th March)

Brioche is a beautiful stitch that creates a soft, draping and warm knitted fabric and is therefore currently a popular technique to acquire. In this class we’ll learn the basic principles of working Brioche in one and two colours. Experience needed: basic knit and purl stitches, increasing and decreasing.

Skill Level: Intermediate knitting level, confident with casting on, knit and purl stitches and basic pattern reading.

Materials: You will need a pair of 4.5mm 60cm circular knitting needles.

Isager Entrelac Knitting Workshop - 1 place left!
Tuesday 27th February

Learn the entrelac knitting technique used in many Isager patterns in this interesting workshop.  You will try out the technique on a pair of knitted wrist warmers using a specially designed pattern by Marianne Isager.

Skill Level: Intermediate knitting level, confident with casting on, knit and purl stitches and basic pattern reading.

Materials: You will need a pair of 3mm knitting needles.  All yarns for the class are provided plus an exclusive Isager pattern.

Learn to Crochet  - SOLD OUT

Crochet is versatile, portable and a great way to create lovely garments, throws and accessories. You will learn the basic crochet stitches and how to read a pattern as you create the classic crochet building block - a Granny Square!

Skill Level:  Beginner - no experience is necessary.

Materials:  All materials are included including a crochet hook for you to keep.

Crochet Mandalas
Tuesday 6th March

Crochet in circles to make beautiful mandalas.  A change from traditional granny squares in crochet, mandalas are deceptively simple and fun to make.   Suitable for anyone who has mastered the crochet basics (slip stitch, double and treble crochet).

Skill Level:  Improving beginner or intermediate crochet level.  Must be comfortable with basic crochet techniques.

Materials:  You will need a 3.5mm or 4mm crochet hook. Yarns to practice with in the class are included.  You will need additional DK yarn  to make and complete additional mandalas.

Magic Loop
Saturday 10th March
10am to 1pm


Tackle the popular knitting in the round technique called the Magic Loop.  Used to knit small circumferences on long circular needles, the Magic Loop, once mastered, is a versatile technique that can be used to knit a range or knitted tubes such as socks, sleeves and mittens.  We will practice the technique by starting to make a pair of simple wrist warmers.

Skill Level:  Improving beginner or intermediate knitter level.  Must be comfortable with basic knitting techniques.

Materials:  You will need a 4mm long circular knitting neeldes.  Price includes x1 50g ball Rowan Superwash DK yarn.

Steeking
Saturday 10th March
2pm to 5pm


Explore the possibilities that knitting Fair Isle knitting in the round and steeking (literally cutting open your knitting) can offer. This method is quicker and better for your tension as you are always knitting the front of the work and it allows you to knit a flat piece (e.g. a throw) or a garment with an opening (e.g. a cardigan) in the round. Trust us it doesn’t ruin your knitting - generations of Shetland Island knitters cannot be wrong!  We’ll take you step by step through the process to ensure a happy outcome.

Skill Level:  Intermediate knitter level.  Must be comfortable with basic Fair Isle and in-the-round knitting techniques.

Materials:  You will need a 4mm knitting needles to knit in the round (either short or long (for magic loop) circular knitting neeldes or double pointed needles. Plus a 3mm crochet hook.

Learn to Knit
Wednesday 14th and 21st March 
6.30pm to 8.30pn


This class is an ideal introduction to the basic skills needed to turn you into a confident knitter.  Over two sessions you will learn to cast on, make knit and purl stitches, decrease and cast off.  No previous experience is required.

Skill Level:  Suitable for absolute beginners, no previous knitting experience is required.

Materials:  Materials are included, including a pair of knitting needles for you to keep and sample yarns to practice with.

Continental Fair Isle Knitting
Sunday 18th March
10.30am to 4.30pm


Learn how to knit Fair Isle in the round using; circular knitting needles; the magic loop technique; corrugated rib; knitting holding different colour yarns in each hand using English and Continental knitting techniques combined, including the Norwegian Purl!  We will first practice and then move on to start making a pair of Fair Isle wrist warmers.

Skill Level:  Intermediate to advanced knitting level.  Confident with the main knitting techniques: casting on, knit and purl and general understaning of knitting patterns.  No expereience of Fair Isle or circular knitting is required however.

Materials:  You wil need a pair of 4mm / 100cm long circular knitting needles. Sample yarn to practice with is provided.  You wil need 50g each in 2 colours of DK weight yarn for the wrist warmers.

Professional Finishing Techniques
Saturday 24th March

Rowan tutor Avril Best teaches you how to give your work a professional finish - tension; cast on methods; shaping techniques; button holes and picked-up edges; bands, collars; short-row shaping and three-needle cast-off for shoulder seams; blocking and pressing; putting in sleeves and sewing up using mattress stitch.

Skill Level:  Intermediate.  You should be comfortable with general knitting techniques (knit, purl, cast on/off) and be comfortable with basic knitting patterns.

Materials:  You will need to bring along 2 knitted squares (10cm x 10cm in stocking stitch using DK yarn) and 4mm knitting needles, tapestry needle and scissors.

Edgings: I-Cord and Picot Borders
Saturday 14th April
10am to 1pm

In this workshop you will learn a variety of techniques for creating edgings that give a final flourish to garments, shawls and accessories. These include I-cord and Picot edgings as well as knitted borders onto ‘live’ stitches. Many current designs call for edgings that add interest to your work and so this workshop will broaden your skills and your ability to tackle new projects.

Skill Level: Intermediate.  You should be comfortable with general knitting techniques (knit, purl, cast on/off)

Materials:  You will need 4mm knitting needles

Short Rows and Shaping
Saturday 14th April
2pm to 5pm


Get to grips with the techniques to bring style and shape to your knitting with this workshop.  Understand how different increases and decrease stitches can be used to shape garments and make a beautiful design feature at the same time.  We will also look at short row shaping which can be used make interesting design features, ruffles and go around corners.

Skill Level: Intermediate.  You should be comfortable with general knitting techniques (knit, purl, cast on/off)

Materials:  You will need 4mm knitting needles

Professional Finishing Techniques

Improvers Crochet
Saturday 21st April
10am to 1pm


This class is ideal for those who know the basics of crochet and who want to develop their skills. Following on from Learn to Crochet you will learn more about reading crochet patterns and making more complex designs as you start on a simple project.

Skill Level:  Confidence with basic crochet technqiques is required for this class.  You should be comfortable with chain, double and treble crochet.

Materials: You will need a selection of crochet hooks (3mm, 3.5mm and 4mm suggested), sample yarns to practice with are provided.

Price:  £25 (or £40 for both sessions when booked together with an Learn to Crochet class).





















 

Tunisian Crochet
Sunday 22nd April
10.30am to 4.30pm


Learn the technique of Tunisian crochet to produce a fabric that is both beautiful and unique.  You will work with rows of crochet stitches on a special crochet hook, rather than 1 stitch at a time.  Colour work techniques in Tunisian crochet will also be explored.  Basic crochet skills are required for this class.

Skill Level:  Confidence with basic crochet technqiques is required for this class.  You should be comfortable with chain, double and treble crochet.

Materials: You will need a 4mm Tunisian crochet hook, sample yarns to practice with are provided.

Price:  £48.

Most classes have a maximum of 6 participants (there can be more on a Sunday).
Classes are confirmed as booked upon receipt of payment only.

Some class fees include the cost of materials and others, where indicated, do not.  When booking we will tell you what you need to bring to the session. You will be offered a 10% discount on all materials and needles purchased in store for your class.
